DEATH AND DYING
Everyone dies. It is a fact of life in Wytchmourne. However, dying isn’t as it is in our world. A character can 'die' more than once dying.
Death starts by taking more damage than the character has body. A character can not go below -1 body. If the character takes enough damage to leave you exactly at 0 body, they are not dying; rather they are unconscious. After a 5 minute count, they regain one body and can stand back up. When a character is bleeding out or unconscious they cannot perceive the world around them. If the playing character wants to feign death and pretend to be unconscious they may at this time but they may not use any out of game references saying they are bleeding out. When bleeding out, the character counts the “bleed out time” which is determined at the beginning of each event. If no one has begun Laying of Hands on the character or has healed the character after the determined time their body dissipates. When the character is Bleeding Out they cannot perceive the world around him/her. The character may dissipate earlier if they are the recipient of a Devour, Killing Blow or another in game effect. (See racial abilities, potions, and magic)
When a character’s body dissipates they stand up and takes all their in game possessions, barring clothing, and puts them on the ground. This symbolizes them falling through the character’s now incorporeal form, so these items must be put where the character dissipated; they cannot be hidden or moved. It is especially important to remember to drop your Veil. While Veil cannot be dropped on purpose while living and corporeal, upon dissipation it cannot stay with the character’s soul and falls onto the ground. When a character is dissipated, the player will need to hold on to his/her character sheet, as this represents the character’s soul, and the player will need this for potential resurrection. To symbolize that the character is dissipated, the player must have a white piece of tulle, or cheesecloth, or similar relatively see-through material either draped over his/her head or worn as a tabard. This should be easily visible. This is sometimes called a “wispy cloth” colloquially. When the character is dissipated they cannot speak, nor interact with objects, as they are incorporeal and dead. The character can, however, pantomime. Further, they can perceive the world and hear the actions of those around them. So if the character is eaten by a Ghoul, which causes the character to dissipate, they can then see that Ghoul and know that it was him or her who made the character dissipate.
Throughout the game a Conduit Ghost will appear at the Conduit, which is shown to the players at the beginning of the game. The player then takes their soul (character sheet) to the Conduit. The Conduit Ghost will look at the character sheet; this is represented in game as the Conduit Ghost examining the character’s soul. A character has two free deaths, in which the Conduit Ghost will resurrect the character without any sort of chance of permanent death. After those are expended the Conduit Ghost will have the character’s dissipated form pull from a bag of beads to determine whether they can resurrect the character. If it determined the character can be resurrected, they are restored to corporeal form with full body. The character does not regain any pool or per day or per event abilities. If it is determined the character cannot be resurrected, they permanently die. The character can no longer be played and the points cannot be spent again. The more times a character dies, the more likely it is that they will permanently die.
